Where it’s used, job by job.

Where every trim goes, and why.

Trims are where cladding orders go wrong, so here is each one, numbered the way your kit is numbered. Trims come colour-matched to your boards; Duo Tone always takes black.

A garden room clad on all four sides: every outside corner gets edging trim (3), and there are no corner pieces. The cutaway shows the battens (5) and the screws (6) behind the boards.

Which corners get a corner piece?

Only a single L, outside or inside. Corner pieces are tongue-and-groove and can never meet another corner piece, so a wall with a corner at both ends takes edging trim at both. That goes for inside corners too: an alcove gets edging trim, not internal corners. The planner applies this for you.

      A single L, from outside

The one corner takes an external corner piece (1). The open ends take edging trim (3).

      A feature wall

Open at both ends: edging trim (3) caps the ends, the top and the base.

      A single inside L

Two clad walls facing each other, neither with another corner: both finish in an internal corner (2). In an alcove both inside corners take edging trim (3).

The board, bought once, never treated.

      Fitting it yourself.

A feature wall is a weekend's work with a drill, a level and a fine-tooth saw. Here is the whole job in one drawing and six rules.

      • 500mm

Battens at 500 mm centres, at 90° to the boards, in one layer.

      • None

No counter-battens. The boards are grooved on the back, so water drains even when they run vertically.

      • ×2

Double battens where boards join end to end, and round every window and door.

      • Hidden

Screwed through the lip into every batten. The next board hides the screw. Colour-coded screws on the first and last boards and the trims.

      • 25mm

An air gap behind the boards, open at the top and the bottom so air can move.

      • 10mm

Leave 10 mm at the ground and 5 mm to every trim.

      Your questions, answered.

The questions people ask us before they buy. Anything else: 0161 509 8637.

Does it need an air gap?

Yes. Always fit it on battens with at least a 25 mm air gap behind the boards, open at the top and the bottom so air can move. Never fix boards straight onto the wall, and never seal the gap.

Which way do the battens run, and do vertical boards need counter-battens?

Battens always run at 90° to the boards, 500 mm apart, in one layer. Vertical boards don't need counter-battens: the boards are grooved on the back, so water drains.

Can I clad over brick, render, pebbledash or a timber frame?

Yes, over any sound wall, because the battens do the work. On brick or block, use masonry fixings. On render or pebbledash, knock off anything loose and pack the battens so they're plumb. On a timber frame or garden room, fix through a breather membrane into the studs.

      Can I use it indoors?

Some rooms in a house have fire rules for wall linings, so check with building control before cladding inside a living space. Call 0161 509 8637 and we'll talk your wall through.

      Vertical or horizontal?

Both work. Vertical makes a low building look taller; horizontal makes a long, low one look wider. The planner shows the board count and price both ways for your wall.

2.5 m or 3.6 m, and how do boards join?

The planner picks the length that costs less for your wall and tells you why. On a long horizontal run, boards join end to end on a double batten, and we stagger the joins row to row. A vertical wall taller than 3.6 m gets a horizontal join with a batten behind it.

My wall has a sloped top.

Use "Sloped top?" in step 2 and give the height at each end. The planner counts every column at its own height.

      Do I need planning permission?

Often not, but not always. Cladding a house or extension needs permission in conservation areas, National Parks, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Broads and World Heritage Sites; elsewhere it must look similar to your existing walls. Garden rooms have no such rule. Re-cladding a quarter or more of a house wall usually needs Building Regulations approval.

Guidance for England; check with your local authority.

My wall is within 1 m of the boundary.

Building Regulations guidance expects a wall less than 1 m from a boundary to have an outer surface of Class B-s3,d2 or better, on a fire-resisting wall. Our Fire Rated board is Class B-s2,d0. Check with building control; rules differ in Scotland.

      Does it fade?

The boards are capped composite, which holds its colour far better than uncapped boards. Expect a slight mellowing in strong sun. The 25-year warranty covers excessive fading. Order samples and look at them outside before you choose.

Can I cut it? What if the last board has to be ripped lengthways?

Cut it with an ordinary fine-tooth saw, outside, with a mask and glasses. Ripping a board lengthways removes its tongue and groove, so the last board is face-fixed with colour-coded screws and finished with edging trim.

      What gaps do I leave?

10 mm at the ground and 5 mm to every trim, with at least a 25 mm air gap behind the boards, open at the top and the bottom.

How do I clean it? Can I paint it?

Wash it once a year with water, a little washing-up liquid and a soft brush. Don't use a pressure washer. It can't be painted.

      Can I fit it myself?

Yes for feature walls, garden walls and single-storey garden rooms, if you're handy with a drill, a level and a saw. You'll want two people for 3.6 m boards. Anything needing scaffolding is usually a builder's job.

      Is it cheaper than timber?

No. Timber costs less to buy. You're paying for cladding you fit once and leave alone: no oiling, staining or painting.
